U.S. Involvement in the Mexican Revolution and WWI

Background on the Revolution

1.       Mexico had been ruled by one man Porforio Diaz for more than 30 years.

a.       Diaz became a national hero at the Mexican battle of Puebla (Cinco de Mayo)

b.      During his rule the power of the Government was concentrated into a few select hands the people had no power to express their opinions or select their public officials.

c.       Wealth was likewise concentrated in the hands of the few and injustice and corruption was everywhere, in the cities and the countryside alike.

2.       In the early 1900’s a new brand of political leaders wanted to participate in Mexican Politics

a.       They were denied by the people that were already entrenched in power

3.       The Mexican Constitution already called for public elections and democratic ideas

a.       Diaz and his supporters used their power to keep these new Ideas out of Mexico and to hold their power indefinitely.
