Proposed by Henry Clay but pushed through after the death of President Zachary Taylor by
Stephen Douglas and Daniel Webster.
Proposed 5 different stipulations that were seen to benefit both the North and South:
California was admitted to the Union as a free state
Texas received money for their claims on part of the New Mexico Territory
New Mexico Territory was organized with no preference to slavery.
The slave trade (not slavery itself ) was abolished in Washington D.C.
The Fugitive Slave law was passed
i. The law made it a federal crime to assist runaway slaves
ii. Authorized the arrest of escaped slaves in states where slavery was illegal
Enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act angered many Northerners that saw firsthand how escaped
slaves were treated when captured by slave catcher.
