The war begins to wind down

1.       The entry of the United States into the war was none too soon for the allies as they had just failed in an attempt to break the deadlock on the western front

2.       On the Eastern front the Russians began to revolt and overthrew the czar

a.       Taking control was a group of Bolsheviks led by Vladimir Lenin who  opposed the war

b.      Lenin moved quickly to withdrawal Russia from the war, and signed a treaty with the central powers, which left the central powers free to concentrate all their efforts on the Western Front

3.       Early 1918 the Germans launched a tremendous offensive at the Allies which included some 1 million soldiers

a.       By May of 1918 the Germans had pushed the allied troops back to the Marne river only 50 mile from Paris

b.      In light of the circumstances the U.S. General John Pershing agreed to allow American Troops to fight for a French commander, this made the difference and the French and Americans were able to hold against the assault and save Paris

c.       In July  the Germans again threw everything they had into one final assault , the Allied lines again held

d.      Two days later a counterattack was ordered and the Germans began to be pushed back out of France, changing the tide of the War.
